Phyllis's Story.
Phyllis Baxter was born on 28th September 1914 in Chorlton near Manchester and after a family trip to Brazil where her father was working she settled aged 13 in Dane in Shaw Congleton Cheshire. After initially working in the family Mill business at the outbreak of war she enrolled in Voluntary Aid Detachment at Congleton, She subsequently worked at Biddulph Orthopedic Hospital, Mostyn Hall Chester, Tabley Hall Knutsford and latterly at Lynthorpe Camp reception Hospital for ATS She died on the 8th May 1943 at Davyhulme Military Hospital near Manchester. It is thought that Phee (as she was known) died of pneumonia probably bacterial pneumonia (more sudden and deadly than the viral sort) and of course it was probably before antibiotics. She is buried at the family plot in Holy Trinity Church Mossley Congleton and commemerated on the War Memorial at the same church.
